Historic Budget Legislation A Blueprint For Reversing Dangerous Cuts To Critical Cancer Research

March 13, 2008

“Members from both sides of the aisle came together in the United States Senate today to voice their overwhelming support for cancer patients and their loved ones, approving a budget amendment that includes a 10.2 percent increase in funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

“If one person can fight cancer, a nation can work together to defeat it.  While the budget resolution may be an initial blueprint for getting critical funding levels back on track, this vote is evidence that legislators acknowledge the serious risk to past progress and future gains if funding cannot keep pace with biomedical inflation.

“We applaud Senators Arlen Specter (R-PA) and Tom Harkin (D-IA) for introducing this amendment and for their longstanding fight against cancer and unwavering support for increased NIH funding.  By refusing to accept the status quo with yet another flat-funded proposal from President Bush, Congress made a clear choice to save lives.  The cancer community is counting on legislators to carry this message forward throughout the budget process and make these proposed increases for critical medical research a reality.”
