BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) is bringing the fight against cancer to game day with a Tailgate for Tomorrow’s Cures at 5:30 p.m. before UAB’s kickoff game versus Alabama State on August 28 and invites the community to join.
The tailgate will give researchers and other cancer advocates from around Alabama a place to connect as ACS CAN sends a clear message to Congress not to fumble cancer research at this crucial time. Members of Congress are preparing to vote for funding for institutions like UAB that will help research cures and save lives. Alabama has $380 million in National Institutes of Health funding at stake, $43 million of which goes to research grants through the National Cancer Institute. The NIH funds 4,400 jobs in Alabama and boosts nearly $1 billion in economic activity for the state. The event follows the placement of billboards in Birmingham and Montgomery that warn against any funding cuts.
We will have advocates available for interviews as well as a visual setup. Advocates on site will also travel to Washington, D.C. in coming weeks to meet with Alabama lawmakers in Congress.
