More than 220,000 Alabamians are living without health insurance simply because our leaders have refused to expand Medicaid. These folks are in the “Coverage Gap,” living sicker and dying younger than those with health insurance. The majority of people living in that gap are people of color, left behind because leaders in those states are putting politics ahead of people. Medicaid Covers US is our campaign to promote Medicaid as one part of the solution to achieve health equity in the US. Health coverage is something we all need, and we all deserve. It’s time to close the gap.

Jesse is a father, a husband of 20 years, and a U.S. Army veteran who served in Iraq under the 214th Fires Brigade. Jesse is also an advocate for closing the coverage gap because he believes that it is time for Alabama to take a step forward and make health care available to everyone who calls Alabama home. He is proof that closing the coverage gap will positively impact the health and vitality of Alabama!

Too many Alabamians go without healthcare as families struggle to afford medical bills while the cost of food and housing rise. This short documentary explores how Medicaid would be a lifeline for residents caught in the health coverage gap from a faith perspective and how Alabama Policymakers can change that.

In Alabama there has been a stark racial and geographic divide in who is suffering from COVID-19, in part because of long-standing barriers to health insurance coverage. David Silverstein, President of The Five Stone Group explores the crucial need for Medicaid Expansion in the state of Alabama to help the thousands of Alabamians that do not have health care coverage obtain vital services.

Adrea is a mother, a small business owner and a full-time student. She doesn’t have access to health insurance and she worries about what an illness or injury could mean for her and her family.

Santana works full time but makes too much money for Medicaid and not enough to afford private insurance, which leaves her without access to health care coverage. She worries what would happen if her type II diabetes got out of control.

Dr. Carter is the only physician serving his hometown of 850 residents. Some of his patients do not have access to health insurance and this means they’re not getting the preventive care they need to stay healthy and avoid worsening chronic conditions.

Pam and Rusty live in rural Alabama. They rely on their local hospital, which is 10 minutes away, and don’t know what would happen if they had an accident and their hospital wasn’t there.

As the executive director of the Greene County Industrial Development Authority, Phillis helps attract new and retain existing businesses to the community. But she is worried about what would happen to the town if their hospital were to close.
