On November 10th, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), will host our 6th annual forum in Connecticut. The goal is to focus on public policies that could effectively eliminate barriers that prevent patients from accessing evidence-based and innovative cancer care with an emphasis on policies and programs that address inequities in the system.

Focus of the Forum

The American Cancer Society and the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) have an ambitious goal to achieve a 40% reduction in cancer mortality in the United States by 2035. If we are to achieve that goal, we must fight to achieve health equity, the just and fair opportunity for everyone to prevent, find, treat and survive cancer – regardless of how much money they make, the color of their skin, their sexual orientation, their gender identity, their disability status, or where they live. Health equity means that everyone has a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible which requires removing obstacles to health such as poverty, discrimination, and their consequences. This event will focus on health equity and its impact on access to care in the cancer space. Participants will include diverse stakeholders in our communities – patient advocates, payors, health systems, business leaders, and lawmakers to discuss the health disparities in Connecticut and plan to bring policy change to begin to resolve these issues. ACS CAN will use this event to help illustrate and answer the following questions:

  • What is health equity and what are we doing to close the gap for cancer patients in Connecticut?

  • How can we improve patient access to healthcare to improve cancer mortality in Connecticut?

  • What policies does ACS CAN advocate for that ensure access to quality, affordable and comprehensive health insurance including efforts to curb the availability of inadequate health plans and protect and enhance Medicaid eligibility.
