Sheila: Durham, NC

SheilaSheila is the mom of two young children. She works hard, often two or three jobs at once to make ends meet. But she doesn’t have health insurance through her jobs, and she doesn’t make enough money to buy private health insurance. “I work hard,” she said. “I pay taxes. I am not running away from paying for health insurance.”

Fortunately, Sheila’s children qualify for Medicaid, which has been a lifesaver for their family, but Sheila herself is without health coverage. Her daughter was born with microtia, a birth defect, and has other special needs. Because of her condition, she has needed surgery, tests, specialist visits, speech therapy and other treatments. “Without Medicaid, she simply would not have gotten the therapy she needs. But thanks to Medicaid, she got this vital care. I can’t begin to tell you what a difference it has made in her speech, her hearing and her mobility,” Sheila said.

Sheila is grateful that her children are covered by Medicaid, and that her children are able to get the care they need. “That means more time for my kids to learn, to play, and to enjoy just being kids,” Sheila said. “That’s what comes with having access to health care when you need it. It prevents more serious problems, promotes independence, and saves everyone money in the long run.”
