Nora: Fort Payne AL

Share

NoraWhen Nora was born with trisomy 13, a genetic condition that causes multiple medical issues, her mom, Katie, was told there was only a 10% chance she would live past her first birthday. But Nora recently celebrated her 2nd birthday thanks in part to the care she received from Medicaid.

Although Katie, a speech pathologist, and her husband, a school teacher and pastor, both work and have insurance, they quickly became overwhelmed by the co-payments and deductibles from Nora’s numerous doctor visits, medicines and surgeries. When their insurance refused to cover monthly $2,000 immunity shots before Nora’s heart surgery, Katie applied to and was approved for Medicaid, through a waiver program that assists children and families with disabilities in Alabama.

With Medicaid’s help, Katie and her husband can now ensure that Nora gets all the care and services she needs to thrive.
