COLUMBUS, OHIO  – “As lawmakers dive into the 2023 legislative session, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) urges legislators to prioritize passing legislation to ease the burden of cancer on Buckeyes.

“ACS CAN calls on the legislature to increase access to biomarker testing, a game changer in the fight against cancer and an essential step in accessing precision medicine treatments by ensuring state regulated health insurance, including Medicaid, covers appropriate biomarker testing for patients who could benefit. Dubbed ‘the right treatment at the right time,’ precision medicine has played a critical role in improving cancer outcomes. Despite its benefits, health insurance coverage of biomarker testing has not kept pace with innovations in treatment.

“Furthermore, copay accumulator legislation unanimously passed the House last session but was never brought to the Senate floor. Many Ohioans face high out-of-pocket costs for their prescription drugs, and copay assistance programs are critical to helping patients access the needed therapies. Passing this legislation would ensure Ohioans receive the total value of prescription drug assistance to afford their treatments.

Finally, as the legislature makes its way through the budget process, ACS CAN encourages our elected officials to prioritize funding for tobacco prevention and cessation programs at $20.3 million and the state’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Project at $1.1 million. These programs are proven to reduce cancer incidence and improve cancer outcomes.
