New Poll: Majority of Georgia Voters Support Affordable Access to Cancer Care and Continued Investments in Federal Research Funding
American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network Poll Shows Cancer is Top of Mind for Georgians This Election Season

ATLANTA – A recent poll by the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) shows 85% of Georgia voters believe all Americans, regardless of the type of health insurance they have, should have access to affordable cancer screening and treatment close to home. Further, nearly all (96%) believe that healthcare policies should make it easier—not harder—for people to get care.
Conducted by Lake Research Partners and the Tarrance Group, this poll is a part of ACS CAN’s national Cancer Votes campaign, the country’s leading voter education program for cancer-related issues and policies.
“With more than 2 million people in the U.S. expected to be diagnosed with cancer this year, including nearly 70,000 here in Georgia, it’s more important than ever for voters to make their voices heard on the healthcare issues that matter to them most,” said Michael Cortes, Georgia government relations director for ACS CAN. “Policy decisions greatly impact the barriers people face during their cancer diagnosis and treatment. This polling proves voters want candidates who support lifesaving cancer research, access to cancer screenings and care and tobacco prevention. Voters have the power to make cancer issues a top priority this election season.
“Polling shows 80% of Georgia voters consider it extremely or very important that the government prioritizes funding for cancer research, prevention and detection programs. And nearly 70% of voters say they’re more likely to vote for a candidate who wants to make healthcare more affordable.
“In addition, voters know the toll tobacco can take on our state’s future generations. The tobacco industry inflicts dangerous marketing on kids that addicts them at a young age and makes them customers for life, putting them at high risk for cancer. 65% of Georgians support programs that would protect kids from tobacco industry marketing as well as a tobacco tax increase. Georgians want candidates that make tobacco prevention a priority.”
“Every Georgian should learn more about these critical health care issues and find out where their candidates stand,” said cancer survivor and ACS CAN volunteer Jill Henning.
