ACS CAN Files Comments on the Affordable Care Act & Grandfather ' Rule, Citing the Need for Disclosure, Oversight and Greater Detail on Triggers for Cessation of Grandfather Status

WASHINGTON, DC – August 16, 2010 – The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network filed comments on the ‘Grandfather’ rule in the Affordable Care Act, in an effort to more clearly define which plans will be exempt from certain provisions in the new law.   As noted in an earlier statement on the rule, overall this is a strong rule that encourages plans to strengthen benefits for patients and strips them of their ‘grandfather’ status if they choose to reduce benefits or substantially shift costs to patients.  The comments filed by ACS CAN encourage the Administration to further strengthen the law for families affected by cancer.  For a full copy of the comments, click here.

Legislation Introduced in NYC Council to Promote Workers’ Access to Cancer Prevention through Paid Time Off for Screening

Earlier today, a new bill was introduced in the New York City Council to improve New Yorkers’ access to cancer screening. Int. #1369-2025 will require all private employers with a staff of five or more to grant employees paid time off—up to five hours annually—for preventative medical care, including doctor-recommend screening, ensuring that fear of wage or job loss does not serve as a barrier to workers’ ability to prevent, detect and ultimately survive cancer.
