OKLAHOMA CITY -- The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network strongly opposes the proposal to raise Oklahoma’s cigarette tax by only 75 cents per pack.

The Wyoming Legislature's House of Representatives decided not to introduce House Bill 43 by today's bill cutoff deadline, effectively killing any chance of a $1 tobacco tax increase passing this legislative session.

ACS CAN together with a dozen patient groups sent a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar today urging clarification that allowing health plans to be sold that would essentially discriminate against older and sicker individuals would violate numerous requirements of the health care law.

The legislative session is scheduled to end at noon on Thursday, Feb. 15, and the tobacco tax increase bill has not yet received a hearing.

Cancer advocates and volunteers from the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) and the American Heart Association gathered in Cheyenne on Tuesday, February 13 for a Day at the Capitol to urge their state lawmakers to pass a $1 tobacco tax increase that will save lives, reduce health care costs, and raise new revenue.

Dr. Richard L. Deming of Des Moines is a longtime volunteer of ACS CAN as well as a respected oncologist and community leader. His term as ACS CAN board chair started in January.
