Congressman says TPP trade deal must have tobacco exception

Last week, Representative Sander Levin (D-MI) called for tobacco restrictions in a major trade deal, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). Tobacco products, the only consumer product that kills when used exactly as intended, are unique, and Levin calls for them to be treated as such under the trade agreement. Levin has called for the TPP, a trade deal the U.S. is currently negotiating with 12 Pacific rim countries, to exclude tobacco products from some legal protections that currently complicate trade negotiations.
