TAKE ACTION TODAY

ACS CAN supports S-1493 (Turner/Vitale) which would eliminate the loophole that allows for smoking in casinos in New Jersey. It is time for the New Jersey State Legislature to once and for all permanently prohibit smoking inside all New Jersey casinos.

All casino workers deserve smoke-free air. The New Jersey Legislature needs to hear from you.

S1493 represents a collective effort to address the pressing issue of indoor smoking in the casino industry. Unfortunately, this effort is in danger of being undermined by special interest groups motivated by casino profits. We need to remind our state representatives on the Senate Health committee that there is no concrete evidence suggesting that smoke-free policies would harm jobs in Atlantic City or negatively impact the bottom line of casinos. In fact, data shows that smoke-free casinos perform just as well, if not better, than those that permit smoking.

My name is [YOUR NAME] and I’m a voter from [INSERT TOWN NAME] New Jersey. I am calling to ask you to stand up for the health of all casino workers in New Jersey by voting yes on S1493 without amendments. Casino workers should not have to choose every day between their health and their job. ACS CAN Releases New Poll Results Showing New Jerseyans Want Smoke-Free Casinos: 74% More Likely to Visit Atlantic City Casinos If They Are Smoke-free

December 13, 2023
TRENTON, NJ – DECEMBER 13, 2023 – A new poll reveals that Philadelphia-area adults living in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey are much more likely to visit Atlantic City casinos if they are 100% smoke-free. Nearly three in four adults (74%) stated they were more likely to visit an entirely smoke-free casino while only 26% stated that they were less likely.

The poll showed:

  • Pennsylvania and New Jersey residents living in the Philadelphia area are more likely to visit a casino if it is smoke-free (76% and 71%, respectively), confirming that the adverse health outcomes associated with secondhand smoke are a factor in individuals’ decisions to patronize smoke-filled casinos.
  • The benefits of closing the casino loophole extend beyond the health of workers and patrons; secondhand smoke can be bad for business. Among the 69% of Philadelphia-area adults who are casino-goers (they have been to a casino in the past five years), 74% are more likely to visit a smoke-free casino. Among non-casino-goers, even more (76%) are sooner likely to visit a smoke-free casino, indicating that not only will Atlantic City not lose its customer base, but tourism could increase if casinos go smoke-free.

TRENTON, NJ – On the day marking the Great American Smokeout, an opportunity for people who smoke to pledge to quit smoking, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) released a poll showing overwhelming support for smoke-free casinos in New Jersey. Right now, casino employees and patrons are exposed to second-hand smoke, that can make it more difficult to quit smoking and can encourage people to smoke.
ACS CAN commissioned a poll of New Jersey voters in October 2021 asking about a variety of public policy issues, including whether or not voters support legislation that would protect the health of New Jersey casino workers by making New Jersey casinos smoke-free.
The poll was conducted by TargetSmart, a leading national polling firm with expertise in New Jersey politics.

The poll showed:

  • By a 2-1 margin voters support (60%) permanently prohibiting smoking indoors at New Jersey casinos and just 30% percent oppose.
  • 7-in-10 voters (70%) would prefer to visit a smokefree casino to one that allows smoking
  • Nearly 9-in-10 voters (89%) agree that casino workers have the right to breathe clean, smoke-free air.
  • Voters of all-partisan stripes and demographics support prohibiting smoking indoors at New Jersey casinos.
