Today, the White House again failed to meet their own deadline to finalize the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed rules to end the sale of menthol cigarettes and eliminate all flavors in cigars despite an overwhelming amount of evidence demonstrating menthol flavoring is a serious public health risk.

WASHINGTON, D.C.— March 7, 2024 —Ahead of President Biden’s State of the Union Address, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) is calling on the president to emphasize the need for continued bipartisan support for increased federal investment for cancer research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Cancer Institute (NCI) as well as prevention program funding at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Additionally, ACS CAN is urging the president to finalize the Food and Drug Administration’s rule prohibiting the sale of menthol in cigarettes without delay.

ACS CAN is joined in this call by many state health advocacy organizations as well as the municipal governing bodies of Happy Valley, Lake Oswego, Milwaukie, Newport, Depoe Bay, Siletz and Waldport, as well as the Parkrose School Board and the Tualatin-Tigard School Board. All have formally called on the State Legislature to end the sale of all flavored tobacco products.
