HURST, Texas – State Sen. Kelly Hancock (R-North Richland Hills) on Thursday received the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network’s Advocacy in Action Award in recognition of his leadership to ensure Texans facing cancer do not also face health risks associated with step therapy, also known as “fail first”

The House Appropriations Committee approved its FY 2019 spending bill including a $1.25 billion funding increase for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and a $171 million funding boost for the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The bill also preserves funding for the CDC and Office on Smoking and Health (OSH)

A new law took effect on July 10 that makes all University of Hawaii campuses completely tobacco-free, including the use of electronic cigarettes.

In the last few weeks nine states have worked to pass bills that restrict local lawmakers’ ability to pass future innovative and proactive public health policies. These bills are known as “preemption bills” because they block, or preempt, authority of lower levels of government to pass laws stronger than state law.
