Lupa: Atlanta, GA

LupaLupa, 49, was born and raised in East Point and moved to the Atlanta area in 2017. Both she and her husband work, but neither of their jobs offer health insurance, and they make too little money to qualify for subsidies to buy private insurance.

In April of 2018, Lupa had a stroke. She went to a local hospital, but without health insurance, she couldn’t get the follow-up care she needed. When she saw her primary care physician he asked her to get an MRI, but Lupa could not afford one.

Without access to health insurance, Lupa has been unable to get treatments to help with the effects of the stroke or her ongoing transient ischemic attacks, a neurological dysfunction. This puts Lupa at risk of having another stroke.

“If I had access to Medicaid,” Lupa said, “I would have been able to get treatments. I would have gotten medications.” Medicaid would give her the peace of mind to live a long and healthy life.
