Jarica, 20, is a college student studying to be a teacher. When she was a child, she had severe asthma and had to use an inhaler twice a day. Fortunately, Jarica had Medicaid, which covered her inhalers and frequent doctors’ visits. “When I was younger, Medicaid was a blessing,” Jarica said.
But when Jarica turned 19, she was no longer eligible for Medicaid. Though she was a full-time student, she was ineligible for Medicaid because Georgia has not expanded the program to cover low-income adults.
“If I don’t feel well, I can’t just go to the doctor to find out what’s wrong. It makes me sick to my stomach to think about,” she said. Jarica hopes she remains healthy until she graduates and begins her career as a teacher.
