BOISE, Idaho—Nov. 15, 2021—Idaho’s legislature will reconvene this week to challenge vaccine requirements. As leading national public health organizations, whose top priority is the safety of those with cancer and other chronic illnesses, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), the American Lung Association and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society release the following statement in opposition to these efforts:
"On behalf of thousands of Idaho residents with cancer and other chronic illnesses, we oppose any action that may endanger the patients we serve including challenging vaccine requirements. Because vaccine requirements help protect immunocompromised patients, including kids, they are essential to keep our patients, their families and our communities safe.
"As we continue navigating the pandemic, the threat of COVID-19 remains very real for Idahoans with chronic illnesses, and we must do everything to ensure they have safe and reliable access to the care they need. Many cancer patients and others with serious illnesses face greater risk for serious complications or even death from COVID-19. It’s imperative we do all we can do ensure maximum protection against this virus.
"Vaccine requirements play an important role in reducing the risk of COVID-19 for all Idahoans – especially cancer patients and immunocompromised individuals. It’s critical that as many people as possible receive the vaccine, and we urge the legislature to reject any attempt to undermine proven public health measures including vaccine requirements. The health and lives of Idahoans is at stake."
