2021 ACS CAN OHIO LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES

Victory in the fight against cancer requires bold new public policies that promote cancer prevention, early detection of cancer, and expand access to quality, affordable health care. Lawmakers make many decisions that impact the lives of Ohioans touched by cancer and their leadership is vital to defeating this disease. In 2019, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) will work with the Ohio Legislature in support of the following priorities:

Ensuring Access to Quality Care

  • Increase Funding for Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening: ACS CAN will advocate for stable funding of the Ohio Breast and Cervical Cancer Project which provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings and treatment to low income, uninsured women across the state and is administered by Ohio Department of Health.
  • Breast cancer is the leading cancer for women in Ohio.
  • Affordable Access to Prescription Medicines: ACS CAN will support a legislative fix to "accumulator adjustment" programs. Some health plans do not count the value of coupons or other co-pay assistance programs toward a patient's deductible, leaving patients with unaffordable and unexpected out-of-pocket pharmacy costs.

Reducing the Toll of Tobacco

  • Increase Funding for Tobacco Prevention and Cessation: ACS CAN will advocate for funding to support The Quitline, the one statewide cessation service that is available to all residents regardless of location or socioeconomic status. The TPC program also provides evidence-based prevention programming and cessation support in communities throughout the state.
  • Lung cancer is the leading cancer for men in Ohio.
