Today, the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate introduced the Screening for Communities to Receive Early and Equitable Needed Services (SCREENS) for Cancer Act, a bill which would reauthorize the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP) through 2028. For more than 30 years, the NBCCEDP has effectively provided critical breast and cervical cancer screenings, follow-up, diagnosis and treatment to lower income, uninsured and underinsured women.

LAS VEGAS, NEV. – The Nevada State Legislature passed Assembly Bill 155 as the 82nd legislative session adjourned, Monday. The bill establishes provisions for biomarker testing in Nevada but falls short of ensuring broader patient access to needed testing. While the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) appreciates lawmakers’ recognition of the growing importance of biomarker testing in the treatment of cancer and other conditions, this bill was significantly weakened from its original intent.

Gov. Greg Abbott signed legislation that will improve access to care for cancer patients and people with other conditions by expanding coverage for biomarker testing. Senate Bill 989 will enable more patients to benefit from biomarker testing, an essential step in accessing precision medicine treatments.
