Three-time Cervical Cancer Survivor Highlights Importance of Screening during Awareness Event at Las Vegas Sign

LAS VEGAS, NEV. – January 23, 2024 – A Las Vegas resident, three-time cervical cancer survivor, and volunteer with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) joined dozens of other survivors, patients, and Clark County Commissioners at the official lighting of the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign, Tuesday afternoon. The sign will shine teal and white in honor of Cervical Cancer Awareness Month.

Local Cancer Survivors and Patients Gain Support from Nevada Lawmakers After Trip to D.C.

LAS VEGAS, NEV. – Cancer survivors and patients from Las Vegas and Reno represented Nevada in Washington, D.C. Tuesday as part of the annual American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) Leadership Summit and Lobby Day. Tammy Moyle, Deidra Hamilton, Patti Kellerhouse, Jennifer Johnson, Sean McCoy, and Alphonso Gibbs joined more than 700 cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers from across the United States to meet with and urge lawmakers to prioritize cancer care and prevention.

ACS CAN Statement on Nevada Biomarker Legislation

LAS VEGAS, NEV. – The Nevada State Legislature passed Assembly Bill 155 as the 82nd legislative session adjourned, Monday. The bill establishes provisions for biomarker testing in Nevada but falls short of ensuring broader patient access to needed testing. While the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) appreciates lawmakers’ recognition of the growing importance of biomarker testing in the treatment of cancer and other conditions, this bill was significantly weakened from its original intent.

Cancer Survivors, Patients Urge Nevada Lawmakers to Prioritize Cancer Care

Dozens of cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers met with members of the Nevada State Legislature in Carson City Wednesday. The meetings were part of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network’s (ACS CAN) ‘Cancer Action Day’ which is held annually at the state capitol. Volunteers asked lawmakers to support Assembly Bill 155 which, if enacted, would expand access to biomarker testing in Nevada.

Lawmakers Can Take Crucial Step in Revolutionizing Cancer Care in Nevada

Nevada Assemblywoman Sarah Peters (D) has introduced Assembly Bill 155 which would expand access to biomarker testing statewide. Testing has become an increasingly important and game-changing part of cancer care in recent years due to its significant impact in improving survivorship and quality of life. The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) is urging members of the Committee on Health and Human Services to vote ‘yes’ to this legislation.

Feb. 4 World Cancer Day: Nevada Cancer Advocates Urge Lawmakers to Protect Critical Cancer Prevention Programs

Today is World Cancer Day and the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network urges the legislature to protect funding for breast and cervical cancer screening and tobacco control efforts. ACS CAN is deeply concerned that the state’s proposed budget slashes approximately $2.5 million from Nevada’s already underfunded tobacco prevention program that was being used to address the youth e-cigarette epidemic.

On September 30, the Park MGM reopened as a smoke-free establishment amid the COVID-19 pandemic, marking the first time a casino will be smoke-free on the Strip. The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) applauds the casino’s decision to protect the health of workers and patrons.
