Senate Passes Medicaid Expansion; Cancer Advocates Express Encouragement as Legislation Moves to Final House Vote

Statement by the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network in Response to Full Senate Vote

March 15, 2023

RALEIGH, NC – March 15, 2023 – Today, the Senate passed House Bill 76 to increase Medicaid eligibility, sending the bill back to the House for a final vote on the floor.

The below is a statement on behalf of John Broome, North Carolina Government Relations Director at the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) in reaction.

“We’re excited by today’s action by the Senate and grateful to senators on both sides of the aisle for their overwhelming support and leadership on this lifesaving issue. Today’s vote brings us closer than ever to ensuring affordable, quality coverage for over 600,000 North Carolinians as well as those who will be disenrolled once federal protections for health care expire at the end of the month.

“On behalf of the thousands of cancer patients we represent as well as their families, we’re encouraged by the legislature’s swift and public support to ‘get the job done’ to ensure adequate access to care this year and are eager to see the bill pass through its final vote by the House.”
