Senate Failed to Protect Michigan Kids

Today, the Michigan Senate Passed a Package of Weak Tobacco Legislation

June 17, 2020

LANSING, MI – This statement can be attributed to Andrew Schepers, director of government relations in Michigan for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN).

“As an organization dedicated to saving lives, ACS CAN was disappointed to see senators pass senate bills 781-786. As passed by the Senate ACS CAN does not support these bills as they fail to effectively protect kids from tobacco’s harms.

“ACS CAN and its partners in health look forward to working with the House to strengthen these pieces of legislation and get them moving in the right direction. We cannot leave Michigan’s kids vulnerable to the tobacco industry, which aims to hook Michigan children into a lifetime of addiction to tobacco.

“Michigan’s kids deserve perfect when it comes to legislation to prevent the tobacco industry’s addiction or predatory practices. It’s time for our legislature to choose between Michigan’s kids and Big Tobacco.”
