Proposed Funding Level for National Institutes of Health A Victory for Cancer Research

November 1, 2007

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- November 1, 2007 -- "The decision of Congressional negotiators to pursue funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that exceeds both the House- and Senate-passed funding levels is a major step forward in support of ground-breaking and lifesaving cancer research.

"We applaud Chairmen David Obey and Tom Harkin and ranking members Arlen Specter and James Walsh for their efforts. These funds, included in the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education conference report, are a critical part of ensuring that promising new discoveries make it out of the laboratory and into doctors’ offices.

"While the President has vowed to veto the spending bill based on its overall size, we urge Congress to continue to sustain the critical progress that has been made in cancer research and to reject the President’s call to cut medical research funds.

"After years of cut and flat funding, this proposed increase would help ensure that the progress in the fight against cancer will not be stalled. Cancer patients and survivors in every district across this country are depending on their lawmakers to continue to make this a top priority."
