PCIP Extension Gives Cancer Patients Time to Shop for New Health Coverage without Disruption in Treatment

Statement of Christopher W. Hansen, president of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN)

December 12, 2013

WASHINGTON, D.C. December 12, 2013 The administration announced today that coverage for enrollees in the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan will be extended, so individuals have additional time to evaluate coverage options in their state marketplace.

A statement from American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network President Chris Hansen follows:

"Extending the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan will give tens of thousands of people with a history of cancer or another serious disease the security of knowing they will not face a costly gap in coverage on Jan. 1 if they cannot enroll in a marketplace plan by Dec. 23. People living with a chronic disease such as cancer must carefully weigh several factors when choosing a health plan, including premiums and other out-of-pocket costs, coverage of necessary care including prescription drugs, and available financial assistance options. Extending coverage under PCIP gives patients valuable additional time to select the marketplace plan that best meets their unique needs."

ACS CAN, the nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society, supports evidence-based policy and legislative solutions designed to eliminate cancer as a major health problem. ACS CAN works to encourage elected officials and candidates to make cancer a top national priority. ACS CAN gives ordinary people extraordinary power to fight cancer with the training and tools they need to make their voices heard. For more information, visit www.fightcancer.org.
