New Billboard Sends Clear Message About Cancer Research Funding

ACS CAN Calls on Congress Not to Cut Funding Ahead of Crucial Federal Votes

July 30, 2025

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – July 29, 2025 – The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) has placed two new billboards in Alabama to catch Congress’s attention ahead of crucial votes coming up in Washington, D.C. While federal funding is in jeopardy and progress is at stake, ACS CAN is calling on Congress to provide robust funding for the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute to ensure we can find more cures and reduce the cancer burden for everyone. The billboard placement comes as the Administration has recommended cutting $18 billion from the National Institutes of Health, taking funding back to levels from 2003.

The billboards read, “Congress: Cancer research cuts mean future cures will disappear” and urge people to text “CURES” to 73508 to get involved. They are located in the Birmingham area on Interstate 65 eastbound north of Greensprings Drive and in the Montgomery area on Interstate 65 northbound at Stephens Street.

“As a pediatric cancer researcher, I know how crucial these funds are for discovering lifesaving treatments and have heard countless inspiring stories of how biomedical research has touched the lives of Alabamians,” said Dr. Ankur Saxena of Birmingham. “As a father myself, I understand the value of hope for families when a child faces a cancer diagnosis. Simply put, federal research funding saves lives.”

Dr. Saxena and ACS CAN Alabama Government Relations Director Jane Adams are available for interviews.
