NCI Director Makes the Case for Getting Cancer Research Funding Back on Track

December 2, 2014

WASHINGTON -- December 2, 2014 -- National Cancer Institute (NCI) Director Dr. Harold Varmus today announced the institute's FY 2016 professional judgment budget request for $5.75 billion. Also known as the Bypass Budget, the request is the agency's annual estimation of the necessary investment to promote ongoing and promising research opportunities.

A statement from American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) President Christopher W. Hansen on the Bypass Budget announcement follows:

The Bypass Budget highlights a critical unmet need for cancer research funding, following years of stagnant funding levels. While the country has made tremendous progress in spite of lackluster funding over the past decade, cancer is still projected to kill nearly 586,000 Americans this year.

Thanks to past investment, precision medicine and targeted therapies for some types of cancers have become a reality. But robust and sustained investment in basic science and clinical research is paramount to truly maximize our potential for public and private innovation to address 200 different types of cancer.

We have the ability to revolutionize in the way we prevent, treat and survive cancer in this country. To fully leverage the promise of harnessing a disease that will impact 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women in their lifetime, investment in cancer research must again become and remain a national priority.

ACS CAN calls on Congress to provide the funds necessary to support the opportunities outlined in this request to advance the fight against cancer.

ACS CAN, the nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society, supports evidence-based policy and legislative solutions designed to eliminate cancer as a major health problem. ACS CAN works to encourage elected officials and candidates to make cancer a top national priority. ACS CAN gives ordinary people extraordinary power to fight cancer with the training and tools they need to make their voices heard. For more information, visit www.fightcancer.org.
