Local resident featured on billboard as part of Cancer Votes campaign

Poll says Wisconsin voters want next Congress to make ending cancer a priority

October 3, 2016

Fond du Lac, Wisc. (Sept. 28, 2016) – Local cancer advocate Kay Lock is featured on a billboard as part of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network’s (ACS CAN) statewide voter education campaign called Cancer Votes, which kicks of today. From now through election day, Cancer Votes volunteers will be educating voters and candidates on how elected officials can play a critical role in eliminating death and suffering from this disease.

Lock is the lead ACS CAN volunteer for her congressional district. The billboard shows Lock and says “My son was diagnosed with cancer when he was 16. That’s why I’m a #cancervoter.” Lock’s son, Ian, fought bone cancer and now attends college, studying to be a cancer researcher. Both Locks advocates locally and nationally for more funding, often traveling together to share their story. The billboard is located on highway 41 northbound, near Kaukauna, on the right side.

In addition to the billboard campaign, ACS CAN today released a new poll as well as a voter guide.

The poll, conducted by Lake Research Partners and The Tarrance Group, found:

  • Wisconsin voters strongly favor both “steadily” increasing federal investments in medical research for cancer and “significantly” increasing federal investments. Voters show strong support for a steady increase in federal funding (79 percent favor, 59 percent strongly favor), as well as for a significant increase in federal investments (78 percent favor, 66 percent strongly favor).
  • Wisconsin voters say it is urgent for the federal government to increase federal funding for cancer research. At least four-fifths of voters say it is urgent, with nearly half saying it is extremely or very urgent (82 percent urgent, 46 percent extremely or very urgent).
  • Wisconsin voters feel it is important for the next president and Congress to focus on ending cancer as we know it. Over four-fifths of voters say it is important for the next president and Congress to focus on ending cancer (83 percent important, 50 percent very important).

Additional results from the poll can be found at CancerVotes.org by selecting Wisconsin.

The ACS CAN Wisconsin voter guide focuses on the race for U.S. Senate. ACS CAN sent questionnaires to U.S. Senate candidates Russ Feingold and Sen. Ron Johnson and asked them to state their positions on cancer research funding. Click here for their answers.
