Governor's Lack of Action on Tobacco Use Endangers Public Health
CHARLESTON, W. Va.
LANSING, MICH. – Today, the state legislature passed its final version of the budget, which included increased funding for programs that address tobacco use.
The following is a statement from Molly Medenblik, government relations director for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) in Michigan:
"Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable death and disease in Michigan and nearly 32% of cancer deaths in the state are attributed to smoking.
“Michigan is tied for last place in funding tobacco prevention and programs that help people quit tobacco. The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) is thankful for the increase in the budget, but more must be done to reduce the toll of tobacco in our state.
“Investing in measures to combat tobacco consumption is needed to counteract the $308.4 million per year that tobacco companies are spending to market their deadly and addictive products in Michigan. As Big Tobacco has been working hard to addict future generations with e-cigarettes and other tobacco products, the need for tobacco prevention program funding has never been greater.
“If we want Michigan to be a healthier and less cancer-stricken state, we must do better. ACS CAN looks forward to continuing to work with the governor and lawmakers to take substantial steps forward.”
