HELP Committee Vote Represents Major Progress Toward Comprehensive Health Care Reform This Year

July 15, 2009

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- July 15, 2009 --  “Today’s vote in the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee to approve health care legislation represents major progress toward the goal shared by millions of families touched by cancer to enact comprehensive health care reform this year.

“The HELP Committee vote is a major step forward in the urgent effort to reform the health care system to improve access to quality health care for all Americans. The vote comes on a day when cancer advocates from all 50 states are on Capitol Hill to tell lawmakers that we need action now, not later, on health care reform.

“ACS CAN represents 11 million cancer patients and survivors across the country who want a health care system that elevates the importance of disease prevention, ensures that all Americans have access to quality health care, and emphasizes patient-centered care through the end of life.

“We will not defeat cancer unless we improve access to health care and do so now. We commend HELP Committee Chairman Edward Kennedy, Sen. Christopher Dodd, and committee members for helping to bring the country a large step closer to that goal.”
