DeLauro Bill Could Reinvigorate America's Fight Against Cancer

Statement from Chris Hansen, President of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN)

January 26, 2015

WASHINGTON, DC -- January 26, 2015 -- We commend Rep. DeLauro for introducing the Accelerating Biomedical Research Act, a bipartisan bill that would create a budget cap adjustment to allow for a funding increase for biomedical research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The bill would boost the NIH budget by ten percent for the next two years, followed by a five percent increase in each following year through 2021.

The bill would help to restore the NIH's lost purchasing power -- precipitated by the decline of regularly appropriated funds for research in recent years -- and would provide stable and predictable funding increases to ensure that promising medical research would be supported.

We hope Rep. DeLauro's bill will prioritize cancer research, because the disease will kill an estimated 589,000 people in America and cost the economy $216 billion this year. As the largest public funder of cancer research, the federal government plays a critical role in our ability to eliminate death and suffering from cancer. That investment is further multiplied as private industry leverages basic scientific discovery that translates into lifesaving detection tools and therapies.

ACS CAN urges Members of Congress to support this important proposal and make the fight against cancer a national priority.

ACS CAN, the nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society, supports evidence-based policy and legislative solutions designed to eliminate cancer as a major health problem.ξ ACS CAN works to encourage elected officials and candidates to make cancer a top national priority. ACS CAN gives ordinary people extraordinary power to fight cancer with the training and tools they need to make their voices heard. For more information, visit www.fightcancer.org.
