Cupertino Resident Accepts National Volunteer Award for Excellence in Cancer Advocacy Work

Carol Baker Receives National Recognition from the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network

September 29, 2021

Cupertino, CA – Cupertino resident Carol Baker was awarded the Ambassador Constituent Team (ACT!) Lead of the Year Award by the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) in recognition of her efforts to help make cancer a national priority.

Each year, a lead volunteer who has consistently demonstrated strong leadership while advocating in areas of cancer-related public policy is recognized by their peers with this top honor.

“Through her countless contributions to our mission during her many years as a volunteer leader, Carol has demonstrated time and again her exceptional commitment to the fight against cancer,” said Lisa Lacasse, president of ACS CAN. “Her dedication to do whatever she can to make a difference in our public policy advocacy, paired with her infectious spirit, make it obvious why her fellow volunteers and advocates regard her as a leader. We are immensely grateful to Carol and her continued advocacy.”

Carol has been a committed volunteer leader for the American Cancer Society and ACS CAN for the past 38 years. She currently serves as ACT! Lead for California’s 17th Congressional District, as well as co-chair of the Santa Clara County Tobacco-Free Coalition. Carol is also a recipient of the St. George Medal, an award from the ACS Board of Directors in recognition of her outstanding service in advancing the goals of the American Cancer Society.

“Good leadership is inspiring, and Carol is one of the finest examples of leadership across the many spaces within our organization. She weaves all aspects of our work into a diverse and sustainable tapestry of empowered volunteers,” said Mary Kemp, ACS CAN Northern California grassroots manager.

The award was presented on Sept. 26 as part of the annual ACS CAN Leadership Summit and Lobby Day. Nearly 700 cancer patients, survivors and their loved ones met virtually with their elected officials on Sept. 28 to urge them to make cancer a national priority.

On behalf of all families touched by cancer, ACS CAN thanks Carol for her incredible advocacy efforts that helps eliminate the burden of cancer in California and across the country.
