Arkansas Advances Cancer Care Access with New Laws Signed by Gov. Sanders
Statement from American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) Government Relations Director Matt Glanville
LITTLE ROCK, AR – The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) thanks Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders for signing two new laws that improve access to cancer care in Arkansas. These measures will help patients get the treatments and diagnostic tools they need.
House Bill 1079 eliminates cost-sharing requirements for clinically appropriate genetic testing and guideline recommended cancer imaging for those at high-risk of developing cancer.
Senate Bill 123 makes Arkansas the 30th state to improve insurance coverage for supplemental breast imaging. While Arkansas previously eliminated cost-sharing for diagnostic imaging needed after an abnormal mammogram, SB123 closes remaining gaps by prohibiting commercial insurers from charging patients for supplemental imaging needed because of personal risk factors .
American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) Arkansas Government Relations Director Matt Glanville said:
“We thank Gov. Sanders and our lawmakers for passing and enacting these two critical measures and championing the fight against cancer during the 2025 legislative session.
“As genetic testing and precision oncology become a foundational part of our approach to cancer care, our policies for insurance coverage should evolve to support appropriate access for all. By removing cost barriers to genetic testing and essential breast imaging, Arkansas is making real progress in the fight against cancer.
“No one should have to skip recommended imaging tests for fear of medical debt. These laws will save lives and reduce the burden of cancer and increase chances for early detection, ultimately saving lives.”
ACS CAN applauds its determined volunteers, the Arkansas Legislature and Gov. Sanders for prioritizing patient-centered policies that promote affordability and access to care.
