Additional Funding for Cancer Research Critical for Continued Progress in Fight Against Disease

April 14, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- May 14, 2008 -- “Cancer patients, survivors and their caregivers across the country are counting on Senators to vote in support of  the additional $400 million for  the National Institutes of Health (NIH) contained in the supplemental funding package that the Senate Committee on Appropriations will consider on Thursday.

“The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) applauds Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) for proposing the addition of this critical funding to the package and for his longstanding commitment to fight against cancer.

“At a time when funding for NIH and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) has been frozen or cut for five years running, past progress in the fight against cancer is in real jeopardy and future strides hang in the balance.  If approved, this additional funding could have immediate impact by supporting research that would otherwise go unfunded.

“Cancer doesn’t discriminate by race, socioeconomic background or geographic location.  Millions of Americans who have been personally touched by cancer are depending on all Senators to take this opportunity to do more than just voice their support for fighting cancer with a vote for increased funding.”

ACS CAN, the nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy partner of the American Cancer Society, supports evidence-based policy and legislative solutions designed to eliminate cancer as a major health problem.  ACS CAN works to encourage elected officials and candidates to make cancer a top national priority. ACS CAN gives ordinary people extraordinary power to fight cancer with the training and tools they need to make their voices heard. For more information, visit https://www.fightcancer.org/.
