The House Appropriations Committee approved its FY 2019 spending bill including a $1.25 billion funding increase for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and a $171 million funding boost for the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The bill also preserves funding for the CDC and Office on Smoking and Health (OSH)

A new law took effect on July 10 that makes all University of Hawaii campuses completely tobacco-free, including the use of electronic cigarettes. 

In the last few weeks nine states have worked to pass bills that restrict local lawmakers’ ability to pass future innovative and proactive public health policies. These bills are known as “preemption bills” because they block, or preempt, authority of lower levels of government to pass laws stronger than state law. Preemption bills are popular among groups like the tobacco industry to prevent future legislation that could impact the sale of its products. The following is a Statement from Christopher W. TRENTON, NJ – July 2, 2018 – The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network’s (ACS CAN) Managing Director of Government Relations Bill Sherman has released the following statement following passage and enactment of the FY 19 budget by the state legislature and Governor Murphy:

Hard to imagine, but only a decade ago we had smoking sections and ashtrays on tables in restaurants. Children could not enjoy a meal with their families without breathing in secondhand smoke.

Today a federal judge ruled the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) failed to adequately consider how Kentucky’s proposed Medicaid work rules would effect residents’ access to health care as required under federal law. 

Cancer survivors, health care providers and representatives from advocacy groups joined Gov. Jeff Colyer today at a signing ceremony for a bill to improve patient quality of life.
