New Billboard Sends Clear Message About the Importance of Cancer Research Funding

ACS CAN Calls on Congress to Protect Funding Ahead of Crucial Federal Votes

August 27, 2025

Oklahoma City, OK. – Aug 27, 2025 – The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) has placed two new billboards in Oklahoma City to urge increased federal investment in cancer research ahead of a critical deadline to fund the government.  ACS CAN is calling on Congress to provide robust funding for the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute to ensure we can find more cures and reduce the cancer burden for everyone. The billboard placement comes as the administration has recommended cutting $18 billion from the National Institutes of Health, taking funding back to levels from 2003.

The billboards read, “Congress: Cancer research cuts mean future cures will disappear” and urge people to text “CURES” to 73508 to get involved. They are located in Oklahoma City, one along I-44 at SW 44th Street near South Western Avenue and the other at I-235 and East Sheridan Avenue at the entrance to the Bricktown entertainment district downtown, near the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

“I was the first adult to receive a cord blood stem cell transplant in Oklahoma. It saved my life and allowed our family to adopt two beautiful children,” said Howie Jackson, ACS CAN volunteer. “Last month, my wife and I celebrated 25 years of marriage, a milestone I never thought possible after hearing the words ‘you have cancer’ three times. I’m grateful to God and to cancer research for making it possible and I will continue to fight to make sure research remains adequately funded.”
