We Can All Do More to Stop Skin Cancer
Many people don't realize that skin cancer is the most common cause of cancer in the nation, with 3.5 million cases diagnosed each year. Fortunately, there is a lot that can be done to prevent it. On July 29, the U.S. Surgeon General announced a call to action that laid out five goals to reduce the number of people who are diagnosed with and dying from skin cancer. The Surgeon General called on individuals, communities, Congress and the federal government to take action now. Read the Surgeon General's call to action. ACS CAN isn't willing to wait for people to respond to the Surgeon General. We're calling on Congressξand the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to take action now. Did you know it's been 12 years since the FDA approved new types of sunscreen that might better prevent sunburn and skin cancer? Playing in the sun shouldnÈt mean putting your life at risk. We deserve to have the most innovative and effective sunscreens available in the United States, just like they have in Europe and elsewhere. Let's make sure having fun in the sun this summer also helps prevent skin cancer.
