Volunteer Spotlight: Becky Franks

How did you first get involved with ACS CAN? I have been volunteering for 18 months but before that I worked closely with ACS CAN as a leader at Cancer Support Community Montana.  

How did you feel after that first meeting with a lawmaker? Empowered! ACS CAN provides an amazing platform for volunteers to share powerful stories with their lawmakers. Lawmakers need to know the real needs of patients, especially those in our rural communities.   

What types of things do you do as a volunteer for ACS CAN? I use my voice and my unique ability to bring the patient perspective forward to influence lawmakers on issues around access to health care and clinical trials. I also use my connections in the community to recruit new advocates to speak on behalf of people impacted by cancer.

If someone said to you “I am not a political person, why should I get involved?” What would your response be? I have worked with thousands of cancer survivors and love empowering them to talk to their lawmakers. This is about improving quality of life for people with cancer, not politics.
