Oregon City Supports Statewide Ban on Flavored Tobacco Products
OREGON CITY, OR — Oregon City has taken a stand against flavored tobacco products by passing a resolution on Wednesday that calls for an end to their sale.
Today marks a major victory for public health! After a decade long fight, a bill that would grant FDA authority to regulate tobacco products is finally being signed into law today by President Barack Obama. The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act will ban the production of candy- and fruit- flavored cigarettes and eliminating aggressive marketing campaigns towards children. This law will help save childrensÈ lives as every day 3,500 children pick up their first cigarette and 1,000 become addicted smokers. Congress voted to put the health of our children before Big Tobacco profits and today, the President will sign the bill into law. Dr. John Seffrin, the CEO of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), Dan Smith, president of ACS CAN, and Gregg Haifley, associate director of federal relations, will be in the Rose Garden at the White House at 2 p.m. today to witness the historic moment when President Obama makes it official. We hope you tune in to watch the ceremony.
