Big Cancer Research Win for ACS CAN

February 23, 2009
In a big win for cancer advocates, ACS CAN helped secure $1.2 billion for the National Cancer Institute in the economic stimulus bill. After nearly six years of flat or cut funding for cancer research, this is a major step in reinvesting in lifesaving work to fight cancer.

In addition to the research win, the bill also contained $1 billion for prevention, and money ensuring that more Americans have access to life-saving cancer screenings. "The cancer community is hopeful that this bill is the beginning of a renewed commitment to prevention, wellness, tobacco control and cancer research, and we look forward to seeing sustained support for these critical areas," said Daniel E. Smith, president of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network. While this is great news, ACS CAN advocates and volunteers will continue to keep pressure on the U.S. Congress in the coming months to sustain this critical funding so we can keep making progress in the war on cancer.
