American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network Requests Health Plans and Insurers Suspend Cost-Sharing for Follow-Up Colonoscopies

June 8, 2020

In May of 2020, in response to unprecedented drops in colorectal cancer screening rates due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ACS CAN California sent letters to the Department of Managed Health Care, who oversees the state’s managed health care plans, and the Department of Insurance, who oversees the state’s health insurance products, requesting all health plans and insurers suspend cost-sharing for follow-up colonoscopies following a positive, non-invasive test for citizens with private insurance. ACS CAN believes that the use of non-invasive colorectal cancer screening tests during the pandemic will aid in reducing the drop in screening rates, while in-person screening, such as colonoscopies, are limited or unavailable during this time.
