ACS CAN Makes Cancer an Election Issue at Atlanta Mayoral Forum

October 30, 2017

The race for Atlanta mayor is one of the hottest in the nation with nearly a dozen candidates vying for the position.

As part of our Cancer Votes election program, ACS CAN co-sponsored a recent debate, allowing us the opportunity to ask the candidates about a key cancer issue in the city of Atlanta.

Unlike many of the nation’s largest cities, Atlanta still allows smoking in some restaurants, bars and offices. And Atlanta’s airport, one of the world’s busiest, still has smoking rooms. Beyond impacting customers, secondhand smoke hurts employees who might not have other employment options. For them, it’s a decision between their health and a paycheck.

ACS CAN is working to convince the Atlanta city council to make the city 100 percent smoke-free, and the next mayor could play an influential role in making that happen.

During the event, each candidate was asked if they would support a comprehensive smoke-free law that covers all Atlanta workplaces, including bars, restaurants, casinos and Hartsfield-Jackson Airport.

We asked the same question in our candidate questionnaires. Six mayoral candidates have provided answers so far and you can read them on our Cancer Votes website. Numerous candidates running for city council positions also responded to our questionnaire.

Twenty-five states, plus Washington, D.C., and 915 cities, including New Orleans and New York City, currently have smoke-free laws that prohibit smoking in restaurants, bars and offices.
