A ballot initiative group hoping to increase taxes on tobacco products, to help pay for the state share of Medicaid expansion, kicked off its signature gathering campaign with a rally in downtown Helena.

A Montana proposed ballot measure to increase tobacco taxes is ready for signature gathering. The voter initiative would also extend Montana’s Medicaid expansion program beyond next year.

A rally was held Thursday to spark support for a ballot initiative that would increase the cost of a pack of cigarettes by $2 and add fees to other tobacco products to be used for Medicaid expansion and other health programs.
