Proposed Cuts to Medicaid, Breast and Cervical Cancer Treatment Program Would Harm Utahns

February 2, 2026

On Friday, the Social Services Appropriations Committee held a public hearing to consider health funding cuts, including potential reductions to the state’s Medicaid program, namely breast and cervical cancer treatment coverage. Funding for 12-month postpartum coverage was originally going to be discussed but was tabled by committee chairs.

The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) is deeply concerned about the impact cuts would have on cancer patients, survivors, and those in need of screening.

The following is a statement from Brook Carlisle, ACS CAN Utah Government Relations Director regarding Friday’s hearing:

“The cuts being considered by the Social Services Appropriations Committee would put Utah women and families at risk. Thousands could lose post-partum coverage and treatment for breast and cervical cancer would be jeopardized for others.

“We appreciate the committee chairs recognizing the critical importance of ensuring access to health care for a full 12 months postpartum, as reflected by the decision not to include this coverage among the proposed reductions. We are hopeful the committee will continue to acknowledge and preserve the importance of this coverage.

“At ACS CAN, we know access to coverage is essential in the fight against cancer. We have long supported important programs such as Medicaid postpartum extension and breast and cervical cancer treatment. Both are vital to ensuring access to life-saving healthcare.

“At a time when so many Utahns are facing potential loss of health coverage due to federal changes to Medicaid and the Marketplace, the legislature should not make it harder for people to get the care they need to survive and care for their families. Utahns value taking care of their neighbors and that’s something this committee should take into consideration as they debate any proposed cuts."
