Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchison Receives Top ACS CAN Award

Governor Asa Hutchison was presented the 2016 National Distinguished Advocacy Award by the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) on September 14, 2016. Governor Hutchinson was a lead on key public health issues impacting Arkansans’ fight against cancer. In the 18 months that he has been in office, Governor Hutchinson and his administration have:

  • Created the Arkansas Works program which increased access to health care through Medicaid providing coverage to more than 250,000 more Arkansans
  • Sustained funding for the state’s cancer prevention, screening and early detection programs
  • Signed the 80 by 2018 pledge promoting colorectal cancer screenings
  • Expanded the state’s Healthy Active Arkansas program to include cancer screening programs.
  • These initiatives will improve the health of Arkansans and help lower the number of cancer diagnoses and deaths.

The National Distinguished Advocacy Award (NDAA) is the highest national advocacy honor bestowed by the American Cancer Society Cancer Action NetworkSM (ACS CAN) and is the mark of distinction and accomplishment in the field of public policy advocacy pertaining to cancer. Other recipients of 2016 award for their leadership in reducing the burden of cancer were Senator Susan Collins (ME), Senator Tammy Baldwin (WI) and State Representative Dan Hawkins (KS).
