Maryland Passes Tobacco Tax

May 16, 2012

Congratulations to Maryland on their tobacco tax win! Part of the Governor Martin O'Malley's budget includes an increase on the tax on small cigars from 15% of wholesale to 70% of wholesale and an increase doubling the tax on smokeless tobacco from 15% of wholesale to 30% of wholesale. The increase in tax will make these products less attractive to youth. While premium cigar tax rates are not affected, advocates will continue to work to increase the tax on tobacco products in Maryland.
