WATCH: "Survivor" Winner Shares the Scariest Part of His Cancer

August 11, 2009

Ethan Zohn, 35, survived 39 days on a reserve in Africa on CBSŠ—Ès reality TV show Survivor in 2002; now, Ethan is now surviving an altogether different struggle. This spring, Ethan was diagnosed with Stage 2 HodgkinŠ—Ès lymphoma. Despite chemotherapy treatments and countless doctor visits, Ethan admits that the scariest part of dealing with his cancer is the onslaught of medical bills he receives. This short video that Ethan posted tells of the emotional and financial toll cancer has had on him. In it he reveals that just two of his six chemotherapy treatments added up to almost $23,000.

Š—“I hope we can figure out a really simple, easy way to get as many people in this country insured with healthcare because these bills are insane," Ethan says.

EthanŠ—Ès story is shared by millions of other people in this country who blindsided by the insurmountable cost of cancer. Even the fully insured can face a catastrophic financial burden.

ACS CAN is advocating for comprehensive health reform from a cancer perspective. If we can fix the system to improve the lives of those with cancer and other chronic diseases, we can fix it for virtually everyone.
