Surviving The System: The First Few Hours

May 19, 2009
ACS CAN staff has been preparing for weeks to get ready for some very special visitors who are coming to our nation's capital to tell their stories on their struggles in dealing with our current health care system. Volunteers flew in from across the country and ACS CAN staffers greeted them at the airport and brought them into the city to prep them for their lobby day visits and meetings that they are going to have over the next day and a half.
Some volunteers have been up since 4am. Some volunteers have flown across the country. All of them are united in their call to action: We need health care reform NOW, not later.

I had the honor of meeting and escorting Taylor W, one of our star volunteers. Taylor just turned 11 years old and is one tough cancer fighter! This was the first time she had traveled by airplane and was thrilled to see the sights of D.C. since social studies is one of her favorite subjects in school.

Taylor is joined by her mom and they are both here to speak about how their family has struggled to keep up with Taylor's cancer care while staying within their insurance companies limits. Taylor is a very outspoken girl and everyone has been anxious to meet her. When we arrived at the hotel, all of the hotel staff knew her by name and wanted to come up and meet her. It was quite the experience for a special young lady.

We have many volunteers here who are just as inspiring as Taylor. Right now, they are receiving receiving information on how they can meet with their elected officials and tell their story. Their voice is their weapon against this disease and they are all ready to stand up for cancer patients across this country and make their voice HEARD!
