COLUMBIA, S.C. – Around 50 cancer survivors, patients and advocates with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) will come from around the state for “Suits and Sneakers” Cancer Action Day at the State House on Wednesday, March 4. The event is an annual highlight as lawmakers and volunteers lace up their sneakers to “hit the ground running” for cancer policy.
The event will start with a breakfast with lawmakers. The group will move to the Statehouse Rotunda around 10 a.m. for House and Senate floor proclamations and to host an interactive display of hope in the Rotunda for the public to honor someone touched by cancer. Interviews and coverage will be available anytime. Stacy is the on-site contact at 443-610-3627.
Volunteers will ask lawmakers to:
- Increase funding for the state’s tobacco prevention program and vote against harmful tobacco bills this session.
- Expand Medicaid eligibility to give more people access to care that can screen for, detect and treat cancer.
- Pass HB3202 for cost-free diagnostic and supplemental breast examination health insurance coverage.
New statistics show nearly 37,000 South Carolinians will be diagnosed with cancer in 2026 – a 5% increase from 2025 – and more than 11,000 people will die from the disease. Advocates focus on policies that would save lives.
