Monday, the Utah State House of Representatives approved HB 337, a proposal to raise the state cigarette tax by $1.75 per pack while also ensuring that all other tobacco products are taxed at an appropriate rate, by a vote of 47-20.
The following statement can be attributed to Brook Carlisle, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) Utah government relations director:
“The Utah House of Representatives took a significant step forward in the fight against cancer by passing HB 337. This vote marks a victory for the health and well-being of all Utahns. ACS CAN applauds the lawmakers who listened to their constituents and voted YES. Protecting future generations against the damage Big Tobacco is causing to our state is vital.
“Increasing tobacco taxes is one of the most effective ways to reduce tobacco use, especially among kids. A $1.75 per pack of cigarettes increase would reduce youth smoking rates, help Utahns who smoke quit, and save lives.
“ACS CAN commends Utah House members for sending a clear message to Big Tobacco; their influence is not welcomed in our state. We now urge Utah State Senators to follow the lead of their colleagues in the House and vote YES on this bill.”
