Local Cancer Advocate Receives National Volunteer Award for Excellence

The Award is Given Annually by the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network

September 17, 2025

Washington, D.C. – Vince Marchetta was awarded the State Lead Ambassador of the Year (SLA) Award by the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) in recognition of his efforts to help make cancer a national priority.

Vince joined ACS CAN in 2020, eight months after losing his wife, Betsy, to cervical cancer. After the fog of grief started to lift, he developed a passion to join the fight against cancer and prevent others from going through the same pain and grief he and his two children had felt. As a volunteer for the past five years, Vince has worked tirelessly alongside some of the most dedicated and passionate advocates to ensure everyone has a fair and just opportunity to prevent, detect, treat and survive cancer.

“Vince is an unstoppable force in the fight against cancer,” said Lisa Lacasse, president of ACS CAN. "He made significant strides in reducing the burden of cancer throughout Ohio and across the country. We are immensely thankful for Vince’s outstanding leadership and dedication to cancer advocacy.”

Each year, a lead volunteer who has consistently demonstrated strong leadership while advocating in areas of cancer-related public policy receives this award.

The award was presented on Sept. 14 as part of the annual ACS CAN Leadership Summit and Lobby Day. More than 700 cancer patients, survivors and their loved ones met with their elected officials to urge them to prioritize cancer research and prevention programs, along with other proven cancer-fighting policies, highlighting the real-life impact these investments have on patients, families and communities nationwide.

On behalf of all families touched by cancer, ACS CAN thanks Vince for his incredible advocacy efforts that help eliminate the burden of cancer in Ohio and across the country.
